THIS ILLUSTRATED TRAINING MANUAL ON THE DANGERS OF ALCOHOL ABUSE IS DESIGNED FOR USE BY INMATES IN A PREEMPLOYMENT TRAINING PROGRAM TO INCREASE WORK-RELATED SOCIAL SKILLS.
Abstract
AFTER COMPLETING THIS TRAINING UNIT, THE LEARNER SHOULD BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT ALCOHOL AND ALCOHOL ABUSE. SPECIFIC TASKS INCLUDE RECOGNIZING THAT ABOUT TWO-THIRDS OF THE U.S. POPULATION DRINKS AT LEAST OCCASIONALLY, RECOGNIZING HOW ALCOHOL WORKS ON THE BODY, IDENTIFYING THE FACTORS WHICH CAN DETERMINE HOW FAST ALCOHOL WILL TAKE EFFECT, KNOWING THAT THE USUAL TRICKS FOR SOBERING UP DO NOT WORK, AND RECOGNIZING THE LEGAL DEFINITION OF DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL. THE MANUAL INCLUDES A LIST OF LEARNING GOALS AND SUBGOALS, DIRECTIONS FOR USING THE MANUAL, UNIT PRETEST AND POSTTEST, ILLUSTRATED DISCUSSION OF ALCOHOL'S EFFECTS, REVIEW QUESTIONS, UNIT TEST KEY, WORD LIST, AND BLANK SPACE FOR TEACHER'S NOTES. IT IS PART OF A CURRICULUM MATERIALS PACKAGE DEVELOPED BY THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION (ACA) AS PART OF A DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM, FUNDED BY A LEAA GRANT, WAS IMPLEMENTED IN FOUR LOCAL JAILS IN 1979. TITLED COORDINATED COMMUNITY OFFENDER EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS, (CCOEP) IT IS DESIGNED TO INCREASE INMATES' EMPLOYABILITY AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES BY TEACHING CONSUMER AND LIFE SKILLS NEEDED TO COPE IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY AS WELL AS SKILLS RELATED TO LOCATING AND FINDING EMPLOYMENT. ALTHOUGH DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR ADULT INMATES IN CITY AND COUNTY JAILS, THE PROGRAM CAN BE ADAPTED TO JUVENILES AND TO OTHER TYPES OF INSTITUTIONS.
