FIRST YEAR REPORT OF PROJECT READ (READING EFFICIENCY AND DELINQUENCY), A PROJECT TO IMPROVE THE READING SKILLS OF JUVENILES IN TRAINING SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.
Abstract
THE PROJECT WAS BASED ON TWO FACTS - A 1974 SURVEY REVEALED THAT MORE THAN ONE-THIRD OF INCARCERATED JUVENILES ARE FUNCTIONALLY ILLITERATE AND A READING MOTIVATION PROGRAM USED IN A SMALL NUMBER OF ASSOCIATIONS HAD PROVEN EFFECTIVE. MAJOR OBJECTIVES INCLUDED TRAINING TEACHERS AND PROVIDING FREE READING MATERIAL. A TOTAL OF 148 INSTITUTIONS IN 47 STATES AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA RECEIVED ASSISTANCE DURING THE FIRST YEAR AND MORE THAN 60,000 PAPERBACK BOOKS WERE DISTRIBUTED....EB
