National Institute of Justice Assesses the Impact of Forensic Science on Wrongful Convictions
Today, the Office of Justice Programs’ National Institute of Justice published an article examining key areas within forensic science that are associated with higher rates of wrongful convictions.
The NIJ-funded independent research examined specific types of errors associated with forensic evidence — including an assessment and comparison of various types of forensic science, such as serology, hair comparison, latent fingerprints, and fire debris analysis — and their prevalence in wrongful convictions cases.

This research is essential to identify past problems, mitigate future errors and support the development of targeted, systems-based reforms by forensic practitioners.
