This is the 2012 Annual Report of the U.S. Justice Department's National Institute of Justice's (NIJ's) National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC) System, which provides free criminal justice technology outreach, demonstration, testing, and evaluation assistance to state, local, tribal, and federal law enforcement, corrections, and other criminal justice agencies.
Abstract
The NLECTC System consists of an integrated network of regional centers and centers of excellence (CoEs), with the National Center as the support hub. The NLECTC System helps the NIJ Office of Science and Technology determine research, development, testing, and evaluation (RDT&E) priorities; develops standards and test methods; and identifies best practices. This 2012 Annual Report describes the year's activities by the National Center, Regional Centers, and each of the Centers of Excellence. In 2012, the National Center redesigned and improved its website JUSTNET to better serve the public safety community by providing criminal justice professionals with the latest news, publications, videos, and presentations that assist them in performing their jobs safely and effectively. The report on the Standards and Testing Program pertains to efforts in facilitating standards development and compliance testing. The States, Major Cities, and Counties Regional Center reports on a technology decision tool that provides cost/benefit analysis for public safety. The Small, Rural, Tribal, and Border Regional Center reports on a surplus property program that boosts capabilities and reduces costs. The Law Enforcement Aviation Technology Program reports on how it has helped improve the nation's defense. The Alaska Regional Center reports on its activities that have helped small, scattered criminal justice agencies in their work. Another section reports on the NLECTC System's outreach, which involves listening to, learning from, and sharing with the criminal justice community. Activities in 2012 are also reported for the technology institutes and the CoEs.
