This presentation describes a project to develop a prototype radio capable of supporting all frequency bands and all protocols commonly used in U.S. public safety operations.
The presenters review, in 25 slides, a project that spanned three years and had the three objectives: developing a prototype radio capable of supporting all frequency bands and all protocols commonly used in U.S. public safety operations; documenting capability, performance, and cost tradeoffs for various technical approaches; developing an enabling technology for SDR and cognitive radio. The presentation provides diagrams of the radio and provides information about the various radio frequency (RF) options, design options, discusses digital processing philosophy and software communication architecture (SCA) approaches and implementation strategies. The presentation’s conclusion provides several remarks, noting that challenges are posed by antennas, front end duplexing/switching, and power amplifiers. Technical progress is documented on the project website, which is provided.
