This report describes a candidate architecture for the radio frequency section of a multiband radio for public safety applications and considers public safety frequencies ranging from 138 MHz to 894 MHz.
The work for this report was performed as part of the project, “A Low Cost All-Band All-Mode Radio for Public Safety,” under a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Institute of Justice. The report describes a candidate architecture, which accommodates frequencies ranging from 138 MHz to 894 MHz, for the radio frequency (RF) section of a multiband radio for public safety applications; it provides details of the RF Downconverter (RFDC) and the RF Upconverter (RFUC), as well as a detailed design for the receiver section. Although frequencies greater than 894 MHz would also be of potential interest, they are not addressed in this report. The emphasis of the report is proof of concept, and in order to demonstrate the efficacy of the architecture, the final section presents a detailed component-level and printed circuit board design for a section of the receive chain.
