Abstract

Presents facility characteristics and characteristics of persons under the jurisdiction of local and Federal jail authorities on June 30, 1999. The report summarizes changes in the number of local jails during the 1990's; average daily population and number of men, women, and juveniles confined in local jails; number of inmates and facilities by size of facility; inmate conviction status; inmate gender, race and Hispanic origin; facility rated capacity and percent of capacity occupied; 25 largest jail jurisdictions; number of staff and staff characteristics; facility health services and inmate health; and facility programs.

  • Between 1993 and 1999, when complete censuses of jails were conducted, the number of jail inmates rose from 459,804 to 605,943.
  • On June 30, 1999 a total of 9,458 persons under age 18 were housed in adult jails.
  • In the 12 months ending June 30, 1999, nearly 9,300 inmates assaults on jail employees took place, including 4 that resulted in staff deaths.
