Other findings include the following: general purpose police departments employed 61 percent of all officers nationwide; civilian employment in general purpose departments grew over 27 percent since 1986; the total number of employees increased by about 17 percent since 1986; and the number of general purpose officers per 10,000 U.S. residents increased by 7.1 percent. Overall, there were 24 police and sheriffs' officers per 10,000 U.S. residents in 1992. Employment statistics are presented by police and sheriffs' departments and compared with 1986 figures.
