This three-component presentation describes the features of and reports data from the pilot phase of the Child Training Response Team (CTRT) in the 23rd precinct of Manhattan (New York).

Abstract

The CTRT identifies children who have witnessed serious incidents of domestic violence and provides an Immediate response that involves trauma-focused, home-based case-management and evidence-based mental health services. The CTRT is a coordinated effort of the New York Police Department (NYPD); the New York County District Attorney’s Office; and Safe Horizon, a component of the Rutgers University School of Social Work. The period of the pilot program was 14 months. Data from the pilot program indicate that 43 percent of the families experiencing serious incidents of domestic violence who were eligible for the CTRT intervention had at least one child with an assessment of positive post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), indicating that mental health treatment was needed. Of the families experiencing serious incidents of domestic violence, 82 percent had at least one child who screened positive for PTSD. Additional information on the CTRT program is available on the Safe Horizon website.
