This Comprehensive School Safety Initiative, which was developed by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) under the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2014, is a research-focused, collaborative effort to increase school safety nationwide by identifying the most effective and sustainable school safety interventions and programs.
Abstract
In FY 2014, NIJ plans to examine the issues of school safety within three broad areas: the history of school safety programs nationwide; independent research and evaluation; and identification of the effects of various school safety interventions. The ultimate goal is to develop a comprehensive model that includes evidence-based components. Six associated activities are planned in pursuit of this goal. First, partnerships will be developed with other Federal agencies that focus on school safety issues from various perspectives. Second, researchers and practitioners will be convened to examine predictors of school safety and conduct knowledge-building activities. Third, independent research and evaluations will be conducted. Fourth, national school safety data-collection mechanisms will be improved. Fifth, technologies for increasing school safety will be assessed; and sixth, research programs will be developed in local schools to test innovative approaches to improving school safety. Appendixes contain a listing of Federal databases related to school safety, a technology assessment plan, a Comprehensive School Safety Initiative Solicitation, a letter for investigator-initiated solicitation, a solicitation related to the development of knowledge about what works in school safety and a letter of solicitation on the development of knowledge in school safety.
