Online access is provided to materials for a course that introduces students to the concepts of crime mapping that uses ArcGIS 10.1.

Abstract

The intended course outcome is to give students the knowledge and skills that will enable them to immediately perform crime mapping and analysis in their work. The course materials contain a combination of structured, step-by-step lessons followed by an unstructured period in which students practice the concepts on their own data. The course assumes that the enrolled students will have little or no knowledge of and experience in crime mapping and analysis with ArcGIS 10.1. Although the course materials can be used in any order, a sample class agenda could include lessons on the features of crime mapping, the reasons for doing it, the history of crime mapping, the features of GIS, theory underlying the use of GIS in crime mapping, data types, projections, and coordinate systems. Course materials include an instructor's guidebook and presentation, student workbook, exercises and solutions, sample data, and video tutorials.
