Provides national data on Federal law enforcement officers with arrest and firearms authority for June 1996, based on a census of Federal agencies. Using agency classifications, the report presents the number of officers working in the areas of criminal investigation and enforcement, police patrol and response, security and protection, court operations, and corrections. It also presents data on race and sex of Federal officers and their primary State of employment. The 1993 census, the first BJS undertook, was published in December 1994.

As of June 1996, Federal agencies employed about 74,500 full-time personnel authorized to make arrests and carry firearms; areas of duty for Federal officers included criminal investigation and enforcement (43 percent), corrections (21 percent), police response and patrol (16 percent), noncriminal investigation and enforcement (13 percent), court operations (4 percent), and security and protection (3 percent).
