The AI-MS 1.2 is intended for use at crime scenes in detecting and distinguishing probative evidence, so as to reduce the amount of evidence to be screened in the lab, thus increasing the amount of time devoted to probative evidence that has already been screened at the crime scene. This training manual for the use of the prototype AI-MS 1.2 begins with a chapter on general procedures, which encompass solvent preparation, filling the Hamilton syringe, powering-up the AI-MS, switching its polarity, positive and negative-mode calibration, powering-down the AI-MS, changing the on-board helium tank, and cleaning the AI-MS. Other chapters address the operation of ionization sources, level 1 and level 2 operations, and troubleshooting. The appendix contains the DESI acceptance test and flow charts.
