This Fact Sheet presents preliminary results of the efforts thus far of five demonstration sites involved in implementing the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's (OJJDP's) model program for reducing gang crime and violence.
Abstract
Each of the five sites is committed to implementing the five features of the model program. The five features are the mobilizing of existing community resources and the creation of new resources and positive opportunities for gang-involved and at-risk youth; the use of outreach workers to engage gang-involved youth; the facilitation of at-risk and gang-involved youths' access to academic, economic, and social opportunities; gang suppression activities that hold gang youth accountable for criminal behavior; and training to improve efforts of community organizations to use a team approach that emphasizes community-police cooperation (community policing) in countering the influence of gangs. In presenting preliminary results from the demonstration sites, the focus is on progress in developing a coordinated team approach in analyzing a community's gang problem and in developing strategies to address it.
