This eleventh episode of the Forensic Advancement season of the National Institute of Justice's (NIJ's) Just Science podcast series consists of an interview with Special Agent Richard Marx, the supervisory agent for the FBI's Evidence Response Team Unit, who discusses what follows a mass casualty event.
Since joining the Evidence Response Team in 2006, Marx has been involved in support efforts following disasters that have occurred both domestically and abroad. A main theme of the interview is the necessity for interdepartmental collaboration and a service orientation. Collaboration occurs as the Response Team works with various agencies and specialized units who have responsibilities in the jurisdiction where a mass casualty event has occurred. Not all of the mass casualties involve an apparent criminal action. The Response Team offers its services in documenting evidence of the cause of a mass casualty, victim identification, and victim cause of death. In this regard, the Response Team has frequent collaboration with the National Transportation Safety Board and its efforts in responding to mass casualty transportation events.
