Five articles present research findings pertinent to increasing public safety in various areas.
Abstract
The first article presents findings from a study of factors in homicide clearance rates in four U.S. cities across the country. It prescribes steps law enforcement agencies can take to increase the number of homicide cases closed. An article on drug-facilitated rape advises that little is known about its prevalence; however, it poses sufficient risk to have warranted various actions by the Federal Government to reduce the availability of the primary drugs involved and to educate potential targets for such crimes about prevention measures. Another article identifies problems that impede communication among public safety agencies via radio transmissions and describes efforts by the National Institute of Justice to address these problems. Also presented is an interview with Jeremy Travis just prior to his departure as director of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ). The interview focuses on what NIJ has accomplished during his tenure and prospects for achieving NIJ goals in the future. The concluding article reviews the research pertinent to the factors in families that either foster or prevent the development of violent behaviors in youth. Other sections of this issue report on recent research findings and newsworthy events pertinent to the work of NIJ. For individual articles, see NCJ-181728-32.
