This “Fact Sheet” of the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ’s) Office of Justice Programs (OJP) provides an overview of OJP’s research, programs, and initiatives intended to combat hate crimes.
OJP is generally committed to advancing work that promotes civil rights and racial equity, increases access to justice, supports crime victims and individuals impacted by the justice system, strengthens community safety, protects the public from crime and evolving threats, and builds trust between law enforcement and the community. The current Fact Sheet focuses on the features of OJP programs and resources intended to counter hate crimes. It first addresses the features and findings of OJP’s research and database on hate crimes in America. This is followed by an overview of OJP training and resources intended to assist law enforcement and prosecution agencies and personnel in identifying and effectively processing cases that involve hate crimes. Another major section of the Fact Sheet profiles OJP resources for youth and schools, which focus on preventing and reducing hateful and bullying behaviors in schools. This is followed by a major section on OJP resources for “youth and communities,” which are intended to support “field-generated,” innovative strategies, approaches, and models to assist individuals, groups, and communities impacted by hate crime.
