This issue of the newsletter of the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) reports on various recent OJJDP activities and upcoming events.
Abstract
The opening article describes OJJDP's observance of National Child Abuse Prevention Month by raising public awareness about this issue and supporting practitioners, researchers, and communities in seeking ways to prevent and counter such abuse. The newsletter also notes that on March 30, 2018, President Trump issued a proclamation that designated April 2018 as Second Chance Month, which emphasizes the importance of supervising and treating justice-involved juveniles so they are both held accountable for the harms they have caused and are provided the resources they need to live responsible and crime-free lives. An interview with recently installed OJJDP Administrator Caren Harp focuses on her academic and professional background, her views on juvenile justice, and her aspirations for OJJDP. Another article profiles the life of Dennis Mondoro, who died March 18, 2018, at the age of 49. In his work at the National Gang Center, he assisted states in youth violence prevention. An article reports on OJJDP's participation in the National Summit on Youth Homelessness. A report on OJJDP's convening of Tribal Youth Strategic Planning meetings focuses on assisting Native American tribes in planning and implementing tribal programs and services for their youth. This is followed by a feature article on the "Kids Making It" program, which assists in preventing delinquency by providing youth vocational training. The concluding feature article reports on OJJDP-funded research that examined the impact of mentoring on foster-care youths' involvement in the juvenile justice system. Other sections of the newsletter provide information on upcoming OJJDP events, "News in Brief," and summaries of new OJJDP publications.
