This is a summary report on the establishment, mandated mission, and reporting responsibilities of Operation Lady Justice, which is the program launched by the Presidential Task Force on Missing and Murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives.

Abstract

On November 26, 2019, President Trump signed Executive Order 13898 to establish the Task Force on Missing and Murdered American Indian and Alaska Natives, co-chaired by Attorney General William Barr and Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt. The mandated mission of the Task Force is to improve the operation of the criminal justice system and address the legitimate concerns of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities regarding missing and murdered people, particularly missing and murdered women and girls. The Task Force calls these efforts Operation Lady Justice (OLJ). The tasks of OLJ are to consult with tribal governments on the scope and nature of issues related to missing and murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives; develop model protocols and procedures for new and unsolved cases of missing or murdered persons in AI/AN communities; establish a multidisciplinary, multijurisdictional team to review cold cases of missing and murdered cases in AI/AN communities; and address the need for clarity in the roles, authorities, and jurisdiction of such cases.
