This PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) Auditor Handbook Version 2.0 updated Handbook Version 1.0 in March 2021 to reflect important changes to requirements for PREA auditors.
The PREA Auditor Handbook Version 1.0, released in August 2017, was intended to be a living document that would be updated and adapted over time to meet the evolving needs of the federal Department of Justice (DOJ), PREA auditors, and the criminal justice field. Updates in the PREA Handbook Version 2.0 pertain to Chapter 4 (Audit Contracts and Compensation); Chapter 7 (PREA Auditor Certification Process); Chapter 10 (Probationary Certification Status); Chapter 11 (Audit Reporting Requirements); Chapter 14 (PREA Audit Instrument); Chapter 15 (Phase One: Pre-Onsite Audit); Chapter 16 (Phase Two: Onsite Audit); Chapter 18 (Phase Four: Corrective Action and Final Report); Chapter 27 (Auditor Recertification); and New Statutory Requirements. As a condition of their DOJ certification, auditors are required to read, understand, and abide by the requirements in Handbook Version 2.0.
