The MOLE Programmable Detection System, manufactured by Global Technical, Ltd., in England is promoted as a device capable of detecting a number of substances, such as drugs and explosives simultaneously or one at a time. The MOLE was field tested in 2002 by the Sandia National Laboratories, at the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC)-Rocky Mountain in Denver, CO, to evaluate the explosive detection capability. The results of a double-blind field test indicate that the device performs no better than a random selection process or random guessing. Through additional tests, no contamination was found that could have interfered with the double-blind field test.
