The prototype was tested by the Small, Rural, Tribal and Border Regional Center (SRTB-RC) to determine its use by smaller law enforcement agencies. The portable system was developed to give smaller agencies the ability to maximize traffic reads and minimize manpower usage through a cost- and energy-saving measure. The portable system uses a solar panel solution to charge a capacitor-based system; a Wi-Fi connection through an air card completes the no-maintenance format of the system. The whole system is installed in a trailer that can easily be moved from one location to another with little to no cost. It is noted that while the system saves money due to reduced manpower costs, it is more expensive to develop this type of system when compared to standard LPR systems.
