Abstract

This issue brief from the Safe Start Center discusses what service providers can do to meet the needs of children exposed to violence and living in homeless shelters or transitional housing. This brief is the sixth in a series of papers providing research-based information to practitioners working with children and families exposed to violence. The brief presents several case scenarios on the situations that children exposed to violence can encounter while living in homeless shelters, supportive housing, and transitional housing. From this the brief identifies opportunities for interventions for these children based on their different housing situations. Evidence-based practices available for working children exposed to violence and residing in homeless shelters or supportive or transitional housing are discussed. The brief also presents a set of policies for use by shelters and housing agencies for facilitating screening efforts and providing services to children exposed to violence. A list of additional information/resources is provided at the end of the brief. References
