Abstract
This NIJ-funded report (NCJ 204431) details the effects of the 10-year ban on assault weapons enacted by Congress in 1994. An Updated Assessment of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban: Impacts on Gun Markets and Gun Violence, 1994–2003 covers the provisions of the assault weapons ban; explores the criminal use of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines before and after the ban; details the consequences of crimes committed with assault weapons and large-capacity magazines; discusses the mixed results of the ban; and speculates about the possible consequences of reauthorizing, modifying, or lifting the ban.
