This booklet contains key DNA and Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) briefs issued to jurisdictions involved in the U.S. Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Assistance's (BJA's) Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI), which provides resources for jurisdictions in achieving the efficient and effective management of backlogged sexual assault kits (SAKs) not yet submitted for lab evidence testing.
Abstract
The resources provided in this booklet increase users' understanding of DNA testing, reporting, and screening. It will also assist in developing a strong foundation for using SAKI grant funds in working with a private vendor laboratory as a potential means of expanding evidence-testing of SAKs. In addition to resources for improving and expanding DNA testing capacity, the booklet contains briefs that focus on CODIS and associated disciplines. Tips are included on better communication flow when using the CODIS database, the incorporation of elimination samples into the CODIS workflow, and best practices for law enforcement agencies in investigative procedures following a positive CODIS hit. Some additional steps discussed in cold case investigations are a comprehensive review of the original case, detailed information on the suspected offender, and other investigative information needed to strengthen the case for prosecution of the suspected offender,
