Abstract
With resources being scarce, decisionmakers are increasingly looking at what works and what is cost effective in other jurisdictions. This publication funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance and prepared by the International Centre for the Prevention of Crime (ICPC) presents 100 crime prevention programs representing more than 15 countries from around the world that have one or another of the following qualities: strategies that support action, joint action that has reduced crime, or initiatives likely to provide a basis for ongoing action. The programs are seen as having demonstrated that crime prevention is effective and affordable and achievable in a community. Initiatives are described that were introduced in various fields, such as employment, health and social services, housing, recreation, schools, transportation, justice, police, and the business sector. The intent of this book is to empower people and institutions and governments to work in partnership. Each program is presented in a brief, simple description which includes the challenge, the vision, actions, research and evaluation, key partners, and funding.
