This document, NIJ Standard-0113.00, 12-Gauge Shotguns for Police Use, is an equipment standard developed by the Law Enforcement Standards Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (formerly the National Bureau of Standards) as part of the National Institute of Justice's Technology Assessment Program.
Abstract
This standard establishes criteria and test methods for shotguns to be used by law enforcement officers. Although the standard is intended for new 12-gauge shotguns, it may also be used to assess the acceptability of shotguns that have been reconditioned for re-issue. This standard does not address accuracy or sights (These topics are discussed in the appendix). The standard's requirements for manufacturers of 12-gauge shotguns for police use cover acceptance criteria, required user information, visual inspection, dimensions, functional requirements, safety features, firing, drop-safety, drop-function and folding stock (optional). The standard's test methods pertain to sampling, special test equipment, visual inspection, dimensional measurements, functional tests, safety tests, firing tests, drop-safety test, drop-function test, and the folding stock test (optional). Definitions are included in the report.
