Recognizing that academic programs for juvenile offenders produce very few regular high school graduates, the primary goal of many basic academic correctional schools is the granting of the G.E.D. (General Equivalency Diploma) to as many juvenile offenders as possible.
Abstract
By certifying these incarcerated juveniles as having the equivalency of a secondary school education, correctional schools are helping insure the acquisition of some knowledge and skills necessary for social and economic survival and provide the foundation from which inmates can successfully pursue value-oriented higher education. This paper concerns a G.E.D. preparation program developed by a Louisiana Department of Corrections school for juvenile offenders. The motivational and management strategies and resultant momentum of this systematic G.E.D. preparation program will be discussed. (Author abstract)
