This paper reviews research and reference materials on Aborigines and Australian law and discusses one approach to compilation of a bibliography on the subject.
Abstract
Literature on Aborigines has been both sparse and selective. The first research mentioned dates from 1936. Following the publication of Dickinson's 'The Testimony of Aborigines in Law Court in the Northern Territory (1958)' materials on legal aspects of Aborigines in society quickened considerably. Many of the more recent reference materials are reviewed. The bibliography under discussion is part of a doctoral thesis on Aborigines and the administration of justice in New South Wales, Australia. It is intended as a working tool for lawyers engaged in Aboriginal law. The bibliography will include all Government reports and legislative acts, references, books, and articles about Aborigines. When the bibliography is completed, it will contain about 1,900 citations. Case law will be classified three ways: alphabetically, chronologically, and territorially. Seven references are supplied.
