This "toolkit" presents activities designed to implement the goals and objectives of "Above the Influence" - a national campaign created and implemented by the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, a program of the Office of National Drug Control Policy - which is designed to use various media and community organizations to inform and inspire teens to reject illicit drugs.
Abstract
The toolkit is designed to be a user-friendly resource to help youth group leaders facilitate discussions with teens about influences to use alcohol and drugs and ways to stay above these influences. To date, feedback from a number of local groups that have used toolkit resources and activities report they have worked well with their existing programs. The activities described are entitled, "Tag It," "Teen Expressions Art Project," and "Influence Discussion." "Tag It" asks teens to "tag" the influences in their lives and share them with the world. It is designed to assist teens in recognizing the power of influence and how they can rise above negative influences. "The Teen Expressions Art Project" guides teens in creating their own visual expressions of the "Above the Influence" (ATI) symbol, using the ATI logo template. The "Influence Discussion" activity engages teens in discussions about "influence," challenging them to think critically about the adverse effects of drug use and the potential negative influences surrounding them in their social and media environments. The toolkit also provides guidance on using various "feedback tools" that can provide information and data on how youth responded to toolkit activities. The toolkit concludes with background information on the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign and an overview of ATI resources and advertising.
