The booklet discusses the causes of elder abuse, the role of adult protective services, abuse in nursing homes, and advocacy for and by elderly citizens.
Abstract
After listing 60 factors that can contribute to elder abuse, the booklet discusses the reluctance of elderly victims to report abuse and how adult protective services workers can remedy this problem. Specific strategies are described, such as home aides, vitamin and nutritional therapy, move from home to a nursing home, and mobilizing other groups in the community to help the abused elderly. The booklet addresses abuse in nursing homes and ways that such institutions can make the aged more independent. Also examined are elderly militant activists, court cases challenging age discrimination in employment, and political action groups. The booklet offers suggestions to the elderly for getting along with their children. A resource list includes helpful articles, books, and newsletters as well as national organizations.
