The legal, societal, and research issues surrounding the abuse of women are explored in this extensive resource handbook containing review articles and alphabetical listings of both shelters and agencies serving abused women and of U.S. cities with one or more of these services. A 300-page, partially annotated bibliography on domestic violence is provided.
Abstract
Extensive charts display a State-by-State breakdown of legislation covering protection orders, injunctions, criminal law, police intervention, data collection and reporting, and funding and shelter services. Legal help for battered women and programs for men who batter are presented in separate listings which provide addresses and phone numbers, and in some cases, brief descriptions of services offered. In addition, a literature review affirms a social and cultural context of the role of sexual inequality and institutionalized violence in creating conditions that breed family violence. Finally, an annotated list of over 30 films and videotapes on spouse abuse contains summaries and ordering information. Chapter notes and references and an index are provided.
