Abstract
A framework for understanding the causes of spouse abuse is provided; and community, social, and psychological factors in abuse are discussed. A 10-session assessment and intervention program is described. Program objectives include helping men stop their abusive behaviors, encouraging them to take responsibility for their feelings and behaviors, and teaching them about the many forms and destructive effects of violence in their lives. Additional goals include teaching men more positive ways of thinking and feeling about themselves and of relating to their partners. Major treatment issues are discussed as they relate to dropping out of treatment, continuing violence, confidentiality, program evaluation, and factors affecting the change process. Also included are assessment and research instruments designed to provide information about the abuser and the victim's perception of the violence, evaluate progress in treatment, examine the long-range effectiveness of the program, and increase clinical knowledge.
