THIS TEACHER'S GUIDE IS PART OF A TRAINING MATERIALS KIT FOR USE IN A JAIL PRE-EMPLOYMENT TRAINING PROGRAM DESIGNED TO IMPROVE WORK-RELATED SOCIAL SKILLS, MONEY MANAGEMENT SKILLS, AND DRUG USE AWARENESS.
Abstract
THE CURRICULUM INCLUDES 16 INDEPENDENT UNITS, EACH WITH AN ESTIMATED 2-HOUR LEARNING TIME. DURING THE FIRST 30 TO 60 MINUTES OF EACH UNIT, THE LEARNER COMPLETES A PRETEST, TEXT, AND POSTTEST, AND FINISHES A PERFORMANCE CHECKLIST OR OTHER EXERCISES IN THE REMAINING TIME. USE OF ROLE PLAYING AND DISCUSSION IS RECOMMENDED. TOPICS COVERED INCLUDE TEACHING METHODOLOGY, USE OF VOLUNTEERS, RECORDKEEPING, LOGISTICS, CURRICULUM VALIDATION, LEARNERS' READING LEVEL, DIAGNOSTIC INSTRUMENTS USED TO DETERMINE THE TARGET POPULATION'S READING AND MATHEMATICAL ABILITIES, SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS AND RESOURCES FOR EACH CURRICULUM UNIT, AND GENERAL RESOURCES. ALSO INCLUDED ARE STUDENT RESPONSE SHEETS FOR EACH UNIT TEST AND PERFORMANCE CHECKLISTS FOR FOUR OF THE UNITS. UNITS INCLUDE LOOKING FOR A JOB, APPLYING FOR A SOCIAL SECURITY CARD, WRITING A RESUME AND COVER LETTER, OPENING AND MAINTAINING A CHECKING ACCOUNT, AND 12 OTHER TOPICS. THE TEACHER'S GUIDE WAS DEVELOPED AS PART OF A DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM IMPLEMENTED IN FOUR LOCAL JAILS BY THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION (ACA) IN 1979. THE PROGRAM, TITLED COMMUNITY OFFENDER EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM, WAS FUNDED BY A LEAA GRANT WITH THE GOAL OF INCREASING INMATES' EMPLOYABILITY AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES BY TEACHING THE NEEDED LIFE SKILLS. ALTHOUGH DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR ADULT INMATES IN CITY AND COUNTY JAILS, THE PROGRAM CAN BE ADAPTED TO JUVENILES AND TO OTHER TYPES OF INSTITUTIONS. FOR OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE TRAINING MATERIALS PACKAGE OF WHICH THIS MANUAL IS PART, SEE NCJ 63908 AND 63911-63925. (CFW)
