THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION POINTS OUT RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS IN CORRECTIONS, AND URGES INCREASED PUBLIC AND LEGISLATIVE INVOLVEMENT IN THE FIELD.
Abstract
THE ACA ARGUES THAT MUCH OF THE CURRENT CRITICISM ABOUT CORRECTIONS IS MISPLACED. MANY OF THE RECENT ILLUSTRATIONS OF BAD CONDITIONS APPEARING IN THE MASS MEDIA AND BLAMED ON CORRECTIONS ARE TAKEN FROM THE JAILS. LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, NOT CORRECTIONAL OFFICIALS, ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MOST JAILS. IT IS ALSO ARGUED THAT MANY CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS FAIL BECAUSE OF INADEQUATE FUNDING. THE ACA CALLS FOR MORE FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM THE PUBLIC AND ITS LEGISLATIVE REPRENSENTATIVES.
