The American Correctional Association (ACA) Women in Corrections Committee surveyed 19 adult corrections agencies, 16 youth services agencies, and 4 combined adult and juvenile departments to ascertain the types of programs in place that target female employees.
Abstract
All responding agencies had formalized training programs, and 46 percent of the agencies offered training programs to address the specific needs of female officers. Seventy-six percent of the agencies surveyed required all staff to complete a course in sexual harassment awareness as part of their in-service training. Fifty-nine percent of the agencies offered training to reduce gender and race bias and stereotyping. Training directors in the survey expressed the need for more training in the area of sexual harassment and emphasized their interest in women's roles in managing male inmates, acting as corrections managers or supervisors, and interacting with their male peers.
