This article examines the use of security level as an element of access control determination of smartcards.
Abstract
Identification of the smartcard user has resulted in a focus on the use of biometry as a promising option for correct individual identification. Using biometry instead of, or in conjunction with, mechanisms such as Personal Identification Number (PIN) could provide more effective options for security management. Not all applications require the same degree or level of security and this article discusses the concept of a unique security level introduced via a management tool for each application. This tool is responsible for control of the identification processes, which may include biometry, PIN code, or behavior to determine security requirements. The article discusses biometry as an option for providing input to the card for access control as an example to complete the profile for the multiple application smartcard using multilevel access control via the concept of security level.
