The Supreme Court of Wisconsin reports here on the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the way in which it will affect the operation of the State court system. It offers recommendations for improving access to the courts by the elderly and people with disabilities.
Abstract
The ADA requires nondiscrimination in court access; the essential concept under Title II of the ADA, when referring either to court systems or any other State or local government program, is "program accessibility," in services, programs, and activities. After summarizing public hearings on court accessibility in Wisconsin, this report outlines recommendations concerning physical access, communications, the jury process, and training. The final chapter addresses some of the most cost-effective ways of the State courts can share, acquire, and/or pay for the goods and services required for accessibility. 12 appendixes
