This article describes the steps implemented by Arlington County, Va., to achieve accreditation for its jail.
Abstract
Becoming accredited was a policy decision just like deciding which style of facility the county wanted. Program development, physical plant considerations, mission and policy statements, procedures, and post orders were developed and referenced to the appropriate American Correctional Association standard. Fourteen months were spent in the new facility perfecting operations, procedures, and post orders prior to deciding to apply for accreditation. A meeting was held with all members of the management team to announce intentions, introduce the process, and answer any questions. A team of key staff was organized to provide leadership and coordinate tasks for the next 8 months. The next step was to complete a self-evaluation report. The American Correctional Association provides formats for self- evaluation reports, which are important in assessing areas where change is needed. The Arlington team then asked professionals from nearby accredited jails to conduct its internal mock audit. Arlington involved members from different staff levels in their accreditation hearing. The jail passed accreditation with high marks.
