THE CORRELATIONS BETWEEN RECIDIVISM AND INSTITUTIONAL ADJUSTMENT, INTELLIGENCE, SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT LEVEL, AND SCHOLASTIC MOTIVATION IN A GROUP OF PAROLED JUVENILES ARE EXAMINED IN RELATION TO PAROLE PROGNOSIS.
Abstract
THE STUDY ASSUMPTION STATES THAT STRONG ACADEMIC MOTIVATION AND HIGHER ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT LEVELS, AS WELL AS BETTER INSTITUTIONAL ADJUSTMENT, REFLECT A GREATER DEGREE OF CONFORMITY WHICH MAY REPRESENT A BETTER PROGNOSIS FOR PAROLE OUTCOME. RECORDS FOR A RANDOM SAMPLE OF 400 YOUTHS INCARCERATED AT THE NEW JERSEY STATE HOME FOR BOYS DURING 1962-1964 WERE EXAMINED WITH THE OCCURRENCE OF REINCARCERATION EMPLOYED AS THE SUCCESS MEASURE FOR PAROLE. THE FINDINGS INDICATE THAT THERE IS A COMPLEX BUT PREDICTABLE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INSTITUTIONAL ADJUSTMENT, ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, INTELLIGENCE, AND PAROLE OUTCOME. THE JUVENILES WHO ARE BRIGHT, COOPERATE WITH THE INSTITUTIONAL PROGRAM, RESPECT THE RULES OF GROUP LIVING, ATTEND SCHOOL REGULARLY AND EXHIBIT MOTIVATION FOR SCHOOL LEARNING WHILE INCARCERATED SHOWED THE LOWEST RECIDIVISM RATE. STUDY DATA AND REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED. (DAG)
