This publication, the third in a series of supplementary volumes that accompany the annual statistical bulletin from the Home Office entitled Crime in England and Wales 2008/09, presents findings from additional analyses on British Crime Survey respondents' experience of acquisitive crime and plastic card fraud.
Abstract
Findings from the 2008/09 British Crime Survey (BCS) reported in this supplement indicate that while acquisitive crime (burglary, vehicle theft, robbery) as a proportion of overall crime has remained stable since 1981, the incidence of these crimes has dropped by 50 percent since 1995. In addition, the increased use of security devices coinciding with the decrease in incidents of burglary and vehicle theft suggests that these devices have had a positive effect in reducing risk of victimization. The British Crime Survey (BCS) is a large, nationally representative crime victimization survey of over 46,000 adults in England and Wales. Respondents are surveyed on their experiences of crime-related incidents in the past 12 months, and on their attitudes towards different crime-related issues. These issues include attitudes towards the police, the criminal justice system, experiences of fraud, and perceptions of crime and antisocial behavior. This supplement provides additional analyses from the BCS on respondents' experience of acquisitive crime and credit card fraud. The information is presented in two sections: Chapter 2 - Extent and Nature of Acquisitive Crime includes data on extent of BCS acquisitive crime, domestic burglary and security measures, vehicles and security measures, and prevention measures after victimization; and Chapter 3 - Plastic Card Fraud includes data on card ownership and victimization, monetary losses and how loss was discovered, and experience of and worry about plastic card fraud.
