STUDY OF 296 VICTIMS OF VIOLENT CRIMES IN ARNHEM AND NIJMEGEN, THE NETHERLANDS, BETWEEN JUNE 1973 AND FEBRUARY 1974, BASED ON INFORMATION FROM POLICE REPORTS AND INTERVIEWS WITH THE VICTIMS.
Abstract
THE STUDY SHOWED THAT VICTIM BEHAVIOR IS A SIGNIFICANT FACTOR IN CAUSING VIOLENT CRIME. THE VICTIMS WANTED HEAVIER PUNISHMENTS IMPOSED THAN IS USUAL IN THE NETHERLANDS. SOME VICTIMS CLEARLY EVINCED A DESIRE FOR RETRIBUTION. QUITE A FEW VICTIMS WERE CRITICAL OF THE ACTIONS OF THE POLICE AND THE COURTS, PROBABLY BECAUSE OF THE SLIGHT ATTENTION GIVEN TO THE VICTIMS. --IN DUTCH
