Findings and recommendations of a task force that focused on alcohol and other drug abuse prevention among ethnic minorities are presented.
Abstract
General recommendations include focusing prevention efforts on training trainers, using people with experience in the general field of community prevention as trainers, and selecting people who are knowledgeable about the targeted community. Additional recommendations include adjusting any prevention model to include the cultural, ethnic, and linguistic factors necessary for effectiveness and impact; using multiple models and multiple strategies; and emphasizing the social pressures and social skills strategies. It is also important to identify and build trust with the appropriate organizations and leaders in a community.
