This training module addresses the problem of managing vulnerable youth in custody when dealing with the problem of sexual abuse of youth in custody.
Abstract
The primary objectives of this training module dealing with the management of vulnerable youth who are at risk of sexual abuse while in custody are to understand who the vulnerable youth are, understand the factors that create vulnerability, and understand how vulnerabilities present in youth in custodial settings. Vulnerable youth in custody who may be at risk of sexual abuse include children, mentally ill youth, youth with limited language ability, gay and transgendered youth, substance abusers, the developmentally disabled, those with little experience with institutionalization, and those who have been previously victimized. The module presents information on special considerations that should be given for these different types of vulnerable youth. A list of places that provide additional resources for working with vulnerable youth is included in the training module. Some of these resources include child advocacy centers, rape crisis centers, comprehensive care centers, and private mental health providers.
