These results from a British sample survey conducted in April 1989 provide reasons for adjournment in magistrates' courts.
Abstract
Results are based on reports from 14 clerkships in 23 petty sessional divisions. Data cover the number of adjournments by reason and remand type, the number of days spent on adjournment by reason and remand type, average length of adjournment by reason, and clerks' comments on delays. Approximately 80 percent of the responding clerks reported a lengthening of waiting times in their courts between February 1988 and February 1989. Of these, 30 percent attributed the increase to a shortage of court clerks. 3 tables.
