Abstract
THE FORMAL AND INFORMAL RELATIONSHIPS THAT EXIST BETWEEN THE POLICE, COURT, TREATMENT AND CONTROL FACILITIES INVOLVED IN APPREHENDING, JUDGING, CONTROLLING, AND TREATING THE JUVENILE OFFENDER IN CARLISLE CITY (MA) ARE DESCRIBED. THE ROLE OF THE DELINQUENT AND AGENT IN DEFINING INSTITUTIONAL EXPERIENCES IS ALSO EXAMINED. A FLEXIBLE RESEARCH DESIGN MAKING USE OF PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION WAS USED TO GATHER DATA ON THE INTERACTIONS AND PERSPECTIVES OF OFFENDER AND REGULATIVE AGENT.
