Abstract
Following an historical overview of the administration of justice and sociopolitical developments in Ecuador, this monograph describes the components of the criminal justice system, including the National Congress, judiciary, Attorney General's Office, legal defense system, police, and correctional system. The criminal procedure consists of an instructional stage, intermediate stage, trial stage, and appeal. An analysis of problems facing the criminal justice system today focuses on normative, social, and procedural issues, as well as the various difficulties related to narcotics, independence, accessibility, efficiency, fairness, and accountability. 2 tables and 3 figures
