Abstract
DATA DISCUSSED IN THE STUDY ARE DERIVED FROM A 1969 HOME OFFICE REPORT ON THOSE IMPRISONED IN ENGLAND AND WALES; A 1972 REPORT ON THE WORK OF THE PRISON DEPARTMENT; A 1966-67 REPORT ON PRISONS, BORSTALS, AND DETENTION CENTERS; A 1960 SURVEY OF PRISON OFFICERS; AND OTHER RELATED JOURNAL ARTICLES AND HOME OFFICE REPORTS. THE SIZE AND CENTRAL STRUCTURE OF THE SYSTEM ARE EXPLAINED AS DIVERSITY AND THE LOCAL STRUCTURE, AND MOBILITY AND TRAINING. THE SYSTEM'S CHANGING AIMS AND METHODOLOGY ARE DISCUSSED AND THE ROLE OF THE PRISON OFFICER IS EXAMINED.
