This paper discusses two different models of information systems -- administrative management information systems and caseload management information systems. Each of these models, which differ in terms of function, assumption, and capabilities, is explored. Finally, this paper discusses the feasibility of and recommendations for statewide, multi-state, and nationwide, multi-state, and nationwide information systems in probation.
Abstract
This paper is a state of the art piece, designed to review the concept, present operations, and problems of information systems in general, and in the area of probation administration more specifically. As a state of the art piece, it lacks a section on potential solutions to information system problems, but rather focuses, as noted, on the concept, operations, and problems. Though not a panacea, it is felt that information systems can increase the amount of accurate information available to probation administrators, supervisors, and line officers so as to assist them in making more efficient decisions.
