ANNUAL REPORT ON THE FEDERAL PROBATION SYSTEM BY THE PROBATION DIVISION OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE OF THE US COURTS.
Abstract
THE EFFECTS OF THE PAROLE COMMISSION AND REORGANIZATION ACT AND TITLE II OF THE SPEEDY TRIAL ACT OF 1974 ON THE FEDERAL PROBATION SYSTEM ARE DESCRIBED. THE PROBATION DIVISION'S ACTIVITIES IN ORIENTING NEWLY APPOINTED ADMINISTRATORS, PREPARING A BUDGET, UPDATING THE PROBATION OFFICER'S MANUAL, PREPARING PROCEDURAL AND POLICY GUIDELINES FOR NEW STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS, COORDINATING OPERATIONS WITH THE PAROLE COMMISSION AND THE BUREAU OF PRISONS, AND CONDUCTING RESEARCH ARE DISCUSSED. STATISTICS ON THE QUALIFICATIONS OF NEW APPOINTEES, THE SCOPE OF OPERATIONS, TRAINING PROGRAMS, INVESTIGATIONS, PERSONS RECEIVED FOR SUPERVISION, PERSONS UNDER SUPERVISION AT THE END OF THE YEAR, WORKLOAD, AND PERSONS REMOVED FROM SUPERVISION ARE PRESENTED IN THE NARRATIVE. THE RESULTS OF TIME STUDIES ON RANDOMLY SELECTED PROBATION OFFICERS ARE ANALYZED. OTHER AREAS COVERED INCLUDE CASELOAD CLASSIFICATION, THE USE OF PROBATION OFFICER ASSISTANTS, TEMPORARY DIVISION OFFICE DUTY FOR FIELD OFFICERS, DIVISION PUBLICATIONS, AND PERTINENT AMENDMENTS TO THE FEDERAL RULES OF CRIMINAL PROCEDURE.
